The darmera ( Darmera peltata (Torr. Ex Benth.) Voss , Syn .: Peltiphyllum peltatum (Torr. Ex Benth.) Engl. ) Is the only species of the genus Darmera in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae). The generic name honors the German gardener Karl Darmer (1843–1918).

features

The shield leaf is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches stature heights of 50 to 65 centimeters. Strong dark brown rhizomes are formed as persistence organs . The leaves that only appear after flowering are stalked. The leaf blade is shield-shaped (peltat, hence the botanical name), circular, lobed to split at the edge and has a diameter of 20 to 45 centimeters.

The more than 30 centimeters long, upright, glandular hairy inflorescence stem is usually leafless and often appears before the leaves shoot. The flowers stand together in a panicle or umbrella-like inflorescence , which has a diameter of 15 to 20 millimeters. The five petals are white or pink in color. There are ten stamens and two to three purple carpels .

The flowering period extends from April to May.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 34.

Occurrence

The shield leaf occurs in the western United States in Oregon and California on stream and river banks. It is naturalized in Great Britain and Ireland.

use

The shield leaf is rarely used as an ornamental plant for groups of trees, brooks and ponds. It has been in culture since 1873 at the latest. The 'Nana' variety only reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters.
