The shield-shaped oak horror ( Cyrtaspis scutata ) is a long- feeler insect from the subfamily of the oak horror (Meconematinae) within the superfamily of the leaf locust .

features

Due to its body shape, the shield-shaped oak shrimp should not be confused with other long-feeler horrors. The abdomen is short and blunt, the thorax is widened and greatly elongated towards the rear and conceals the degenerated wings in both sexes. The small head is unusually slanted on the body. The yellow-brown antennae are a little less than twice as long as the body. The species has tiny spines on the lower legs of its relatively short legs. The basic color is light green, but the entire body is covered with white or yellowish dots. The lower legs of the last pair of legs can be slightly yellow-brown in color. The thighs of this pair of legs have dark speckles. The compound eyes are yellowish with a dark point. In terms of size, it is the same as the two Meconema species.

Way of life and distribution

The shield-shaped oak shrimp lives in forests, forest edges and open landscapes with trees or shrubs. It can be found by tapping marginal oaks and is often found in the same areas as the common oak shrimp and southern oak shrimp , which can make it easier to find. Their distribution area extends from Turkey through Greece , along the Adriatic coast to Italy and across southern France to Spain and Portugal . Enemies of this species are, for example, digger wasps of the genus Tachyspex and the locust sand wasp , which is rare in Central Europe .

The adults occur from August to January, sometimes until April.
