The Schiller House in Bauerbach

The Schillerhaus in Bauerbach , which served the poet Friedrich Schiller as temporary accommodation from December 7th, 1782 to July 24th, 1783, now houses a literature museum that commemorates this stay.

After Schiller's escape from Stuttgart , he found refuge for half a year on December 7, 1782 on the estate of the Wolzo family . He had got to know the family through a comrade at the High Karlsschule Military Academy in Stuttgart. The mother of this comrade, Henriette von Wolzüge, who lived in the manor house in Bauerbach and took a liking to the literary talents of the young Schiller, had already offered him accommodation in the event of danger. During his time in Bauerbach, Schiller worked on his works Kabale und Liebe and Don Karlos . He also fell unhappily in love with the daughter of the house, Charlotte von Wolhaben , which was one of the main reasons for his hasty departure on July 24, 1783.

In 1847 the study and bedroom were used as a personal memorial. On the occasion of Schiller's 100th anniversary of death in 1905, the premises were opened to the public at all times. The Schiller National Foundation in Bauerbach acquired the private property in 1934 and furnished the so-called Wolzo-rooms as a museum. The Schillerhaus has belonged to the Klassik Stiftung Weimar , which had it renovated in 1995, since 1941 .

In the anniversary year 2009, on Schiller's 250th birthday, the house was reopened. Since then, the museum has been run by the Schillerverein Bauerbach e. V. operated on behalf of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. During renovations in GDR times in 1967, the framework (see also Fig. 1) was exposed. The house was renovated again in 2019/20. The plaster facade was recreated based on the 19th century model.

Others

Today, next to the museum, a hiking trail and a nature theater are named after Schiller. The Zum braunen Roß inn should also be mentioned, where the ambience from Schiller's times has been preserved. The inn was renovated in 1992 and a theater barn was set up next door.
