The Jagdhaus Gabelbach is a hunting lodge in the Thuringian Forest not far from Ilmenau . It was built in 1783 and is now a Goethe Museum.

The hunting lodge is located on the Gabelbach, about three kilometers south of Ilmenau. The Berghotel Gabelbach and the Kickelhahn are in the vicinity . The Jagdhaus Gabelbach is a stop on the Goethe hiking trail from Ilmenau to Stützerbach . It can be reached via the road from Ilmenau to Frauenwald and Neustadt am Rennsteig .

The Gabelbach hunting lodge was built in 1783. The builder was Duke Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach . It has late baroque features, but is a rather simple building. At the beginning of the 19th century the house was often visited by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , who carried out scientific studies here, among other things. Karl Ludwig von Knebel was also often a guest in the hunting lodge during his time in Ilmenau.

During a visit by Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna in 1852, the idea of ​​building a lookout tower on the nearby Kickelhahn, which was realized three years later.

The building was later also used for meetings of the Gabelbach community , which belonged or were close to writers such as Joseph Victor von Scheffel , Friedrich Hofmann , Rudolf Baumbach and Theodor Fontane .

The house belonged to the state of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach until 1920, then to the state of Thuringia , from 1952 to the Ilmenau district and finally from 1964 to the predecessor organizations of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, which made it accessible as a museum in 1969. In 1995 the building was renovated. The city of Ilmenau has been responsible for the Museum Jagdhaus Gabelbach since 2008. After renewed renovation in 2012, an additional permanent exhibition was set up on the ground floor with the title: “The Kickelhahn - Goethe's changing forest”.

On the ground floor, the new permanent exhibition “The Kickelhahn - Goethe's Forest in Transition” conveys extensive knowledge of the use, protection and cultural functions of the Kickelhahn area with the help of numerous audiovisual media and authentic objects. The subjects of nature, the environment and hunting receive special recognition. On the upper floor is the representative ballroom and the bedroom and writing chamber, which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach used during their stays. Another part of the exhibition, set up in 1969, is devoted to Goethe's forest and natural science studies and Carl August's passion for hunting. One can see the door of the burned down Goethe House, the place where the important poem “ Wanderer's Night Song ” was written.
