The Schillerpark in the northern part of Dessau is an approx. 15 hectare park . It borders the Ringstrasse and the Gänsewall in the west and allotments in the east.

history

Originally the area called Gänseanger was used as pasture. In 1872 the area passed to the city of Dessau. After the closure of the official brickworks, which obtained clay from there, it was decided to create a park to improve the cityscape and create a recreational area. For this project, a competition was announced to “all German horticultural artists”, which Friedrich Scherer's “Loreley” won with 500 marks . Work began in the winter of 1904/1905 and the pond was completed in 1905. Completion of the park dragged on because the majority of the unemployed were employed who only worked in the winter months and at an hourly wage of 28 pfennigs .

The name of the park was chosen because of the 100th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller's death . In 1911/1912 the southern facility was planted and trees were planted on the ring road. The park was completed in 1914. In 1918 a maze - which no longer exists today - was created near the railway line. Since there was a lack of manpower to cut the hornbeam hedge during the Second World War , there is now a forest-like part in the northern part of the park.

today

Today there are meadows, a pond, a playground, a rhododendron grove, hiking trails and monuments such as the Schillerturm . The secondary school "Am Schillerpark" is adjacent.

In the local register of monuments , the park is listed as a monument under registration number 094 40124 .
