Schiller Park (Linz)
The facility, created as an amusement park in 1824, is one of the oldest inner-city parks in Linz . It has been called Schillerpark since 1910 . In 1983 it got its current appearance and in 2012 it was expanded by 900 m².
history
The facility was created in 1824 as an amusement park on the site of the former train barracks and was named Schillerpark in 1910. On the occasion of Friedrich Schiller's 200th birthday , the Schiller monument was erected in 1959. On September 20, 1983, the park was opened in its present form. The total costs of the new construction and redesign amounted to 2.8 million schillings, 1.5 million being accounted for by the accessible well. The Österreichische Spielbanken-AG , which operates a casino next to the fountain , and the Wiener Städtische Wechselseiten Versicherungsanstalt each contributed 300,000 schillings to the construction costs . In 2012 there was another extensive redesign.
Redesign
The renovation of the Schillerpark, which led to an expansion of the area from around 4,500 m² by an additional 900 m², began in September 2012 and was completed in June 2013 with the opening. The enlargement resulted from the abandonment of the lane (one-way) from the country road towards Rainerstraße. For the renovation, the Schillerpark was divided into three zones, the central parking area and the adjacent peripheral areas in the north and south. The space gained in front of the regional library is intended as a “meeting place” and is located next to the metal sculpture “The Other Book” by Theo Blaickner . This contains seating and lounging elements. The old trees were completely preserved during the redesign. In addition, 30 large trees were planted. 600,000 euros were budgeted for the entire redesign of the park.
description
The park is located in the city center on Landstrasse in the Volksgartenviertel in the Freinberg - Froschberg district .
In the park
Fountain in Schillerpark The fountain was designed in 1983 by Hans Muhr and built with a substantial contribution from the Österreichische Spielbanken-AG. It shows five block-like figures seated in a circle 8 meters in diameter, whose jets of water are supposed to symbolize the head and arms.
Sculpture “The Other Book” The work was created by Theo Blaickner in 1993 for the exhibition “The Other Book” in Vienna. Originally it was only on loan for installation in Linz. However, it was jointly acquired in 1998 by the City of Linz and the Province of Upper Austria. Until the redesign and expansion of the Schillerpark, it was located near the crossing Auerspergstraße - Rainerstraße and since 2013 it has been in the newly integrated area in front of the state library.
