Schippia concolor is a palm species native to Central America . It is the only species in the genus Schippia .

features

Schippia is a moderately large, single-stemmed, unreinforced, multiple-flowering fan palm . The trunk is slender, striped lengthways, rough and has raised leaf scars. The leaves are folded induplicate (V-shaped), and palmat to costapalmat for short. The petiole is very long. The leaf blade is divided up over the middle into narrow, narrowing, simply folded segments, the tips of which are unequal and very short bifid. The underside of the leaf is lighter.

The inflorescence is single, between the leaves (interfoliar) and is significantly shorter than the leaves. It is usually twofold, rarely threefold. The peduncle is usually short. The flowers have a long, stem-like base. The lower flowers of each flower-bearing axis are hermaphroditic, the upper ones are male. The ovary consists of a carpel . The number of stamens is 6 per flower.

The fruit is spherical, the remnant of the stigma is apical. The exocarp is smooth, the mesocarp thin and fleshy; the endocarp is smooth and membranous.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Distribution and locations

Schippia concolor occurs only in Belize and Guatemala , where it grows in the undergrowth of the tropical rainforest.

Systematics

The genus Schippia Burret is placed within the family Arecaceae in the subfamily Coryphoideae , tribe Cryosophileae . Their systematic position within the tribe has not yet been finally clarified.

In the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew , only the species Schippia concolor Burret is recognized and it is also the only species described so far.

The genus name Schippia is reminiscent of the Australian plant collector William August Schipp (1891-1967), who also collected the first specimens of this species. The species and genus were first described in 1933 by Max Burret .
