Schism [ skɪz (ə) m ] ( German division, schism ) is a song while the first single of the 15. May 2001 published album Lateralus the US progressive metal - band Tool .
Single releases
Schism was published in the United States on May 1, 2001. Two days before the single was released, an MP3 appeared on the Internet , which had probably been copied from the promo CD . This promo CD was used to announce the album and only contained the song Schism.
On December 20, 2005, the song was released as a DVD single with video and commentary by David Yow, the front man of The Jesus Lizard . The DVD also contains a remix of Lustmord .
construction
structure
Schism differs greatly in its course and structure from familiar structures. There are four stanzas (compared to at most and only rarely found three in an ordinary single), each separated by instrumental rather than vocal refrains .
In addition, and typical of Tool, Schism almost exclusively uses unusual or odd time signatures . In the song, which lasts 116 bars, 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, 12/8, 13/8 and 15/8 bars are run through in 51 bar changes. Each verse of a stanza is sung in 12/8 time, which is musically divided into 5/8 and 7/8 time by the accentuation . The instrumental refrains, in turn, vary the stanza theme in key and time signature (13/8 instead of 12/8). Exactly from the middle of the song, the verses and choruses are dispensed with, instead of which various instrumental and vocal sections are run through. The text and the melody of the singing are Maynard James Keenan's interpretation of the music, which is expressed, among other things, in the fact that the accents of the syllables in the stanzas exactly follow the accents of the instruments on the beats .
length
At 6:47 minutes, Schism is more than twice as long as most singles. The video version also contains the piece Mantra , which was placed one track earlier on the album, as an intro , which extends the song by 35 seconds to 7:22 minutes.
Video
The video premiered on MTV on May 21, 2001 - 14 days later than originally announced. As with almost all Tool music videos, it was directed by Tool guitarist Adam Jones . Following the tradition of the band, none of the band members can be seen in this video either.
