Lateralus is an album by the band Tool , released on May 15, 2001 .
History of origin
Due to a dispute with the old record company Volcano Records, there were delays after the release of Ænima . A process of about four years delayed work on the next album. Tool tried to bridge the gap with the box set Salival and the side project A Perfect Circle .
In January 2001 Tool announced an alleged album called Systema Encéphale , the titles of which have esoteric and occult names such as "Numbereft", "Encephatalis", "Musick" and "Celiacus". Within a very short time, the numerous file sharing offers were inundated with files with these names. Just a month later, Tool announced that the new album would be called Lateralus and that Systema Encéphale and its track list were just a fake in order to deceive the public and, above all, the users of file sharing software.
In an interview, when asked why the album's title track was "Lateralis" instead of "Lateralus", Keenan replied that it was a simple typo.
The album was recorded in the "Cello Studios" in Hollywood, as well as in the studios "The Hook", "Big Empty Space" and "The Lodge" in North Hollywood. It was mixed in the "Larrabee Sound North Studios" in North Hollywood and mastered in the "Gateway Mastering Studios", Portland. In addition, the CD was encoded with the HDCD process, which is intended to achieve a higher quality sound on appropriate playback devices.
