The lake-like widening of the Havel tributary Wublitz is called Schlänitzsee . It is located in the north west of Potsdam .

Location and description

On its east bank is the Potsdam district Schlänitz and north of it the district Marquardt . The federal waterway Sacrow-Paretzer-Kanal crosses the lake in an east-west direction. In the course of the river Wublitz in north-south direction, the lake has a length of about two kilometers. Its width in the course of the canal is barely 1000 meters. The park and Marquardt Castle are located on the north-eastern bank .

geology

The Schlänitzsee lies in an Ice Age channel that was created around 19,000 years ago during the Vistula high glacial .

Hydromorphology

Water depths and stratification

Its water depth is shallow and is given as less than one meter. The depth of the water in the channel crossing the canal is at least four and a half meters. The canal section is dredged at regular intervals. The lake is described as mesotrophic and the water as slightly eutrophic . In terms of type, it is a lime-rich, stratified lake with a relatively large catchment area and the stratification of the water in different temperature and convection levels. Due to the proportion of phytoplankton, visibility depths are one meter in summer .

The bottom of the lake

The lake bottom is fine sandy to coarse gravel. In summer the lake is weed in large areas because of the shallow water.

The bank area / plants

The gently sloping banks are lined with a swampy belt of reeds. In front of the lake there is a wide belt of reeds with dense cattail stocks and rush vegetation ( Cladium mariscus ). In shallow water grows Kalmus . Some of the bank areas are overgrown with alder and willow bushes.
