The Battle of Mehrnbach (also the Battle of Ried ) was a skirmish of the Third Coalition War of the Napoleonic Wars , in which on October 30, 1805 the rearguard of the retreating troops of the Austro-Russian coalition from the French troops under the command of General Kutuzov under Marc-Antoine de Beaumont .

prehistory

The battle of Mehrnbach took place immediately after the surrender of the Austrian troops in Ulm , from where the route to Vienna was open to the Grande Armée . The French and Bavarian troops followed the retreating Austrian units under Kienmayer , which had united with Russian troops at Braunau . In Braunau Maximilian von Merveldt took command of the Austrian troops and led them towards Vienna. There were several rearguard battles in the Danube region .

Coming from Braunau, the French troops marched towards Ried and were involved in fighting by the Austrian cavalry near Mehrnbach . Murat attacked the cavalry posted on the ridges and threw them back. At the same time, an Austrian infantry company posted in front of Mehrnbach was taken prisoner by the French. The French state newspaper Moniteur described the insignificant fighting as the victorious battle of Ried .

Effects

The Austro-Russian units did not succeed in stopping the rapidly advancing troops of the Grande Armée. On the same day the French occupied the city of Ried and marched further west, where they met resistance again in Gaspoltshofen .
