The battle of Camerinum took place in 295 BC. Chr. During the Third Samnite War near the present Camerino place on the eastern slopes of the Apennines.
course
According to the tradition of Livy, the newly elected consul Quintus Fabius Maximus Rullianus took over in the winter of 295 BC. The army of Appius Claudius Caecus , which was in a fortified camp near the geographically unknown place Aharna, and moved with this on to Clusium. However, it is scientifically proven that it is not Clusium, but Camerinum. At the beginning of the campaign season, Fabius returned to Rome for deliberations and left the military command to the Propretor Scipio Barbatus . According to Livy, this is defeated by the Senones together with a whole legion . Another variant, reported by Livy, is said to have been Umbrians who achieved only a small success against the Romans and were defeated again shortly afterwards by the Romans. The Greek historian Polybios also gives a brief account of the battle. According to him, the attackers are said to have been a Samnite-Gallic army, which killed many Romans in the battle.
historicity
That a battle took place is undisputed - also because of the mention in Polybios. However, it is believed in research that Fabius should not have returned to Rome. He and perhaps his counterpart Publius Decius Mus are said to have held military command during the battle.
