Schlagerderby

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schlagerderby was a legendary music broadcast on Deutschlandfunk between 1963 and 1978 that was popular with young people in what was then the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR . In particular, the broadcast enabled listeners in the GDR to receive the latest West German and international pieces of music unfiltered. In large parts of the Federal Republic and especially the GDR, Germany radio could only be heard via medium and long wave , which led to limitations in the sound quality.

The listeners decided on the placement of the twenty titles played by sending in a postcard. The GDR listeners were able to establish contact with the Cologne station via private western addresses, so that they could vote on the placement of the titles. Five pieces of music for the new placement were presented per broadcast. After being placed ten times, the corresponding piece of music was eliminated. From August 1965, Carl-Ludwig Wolff (Carlo W.) presented the program. The signature music Apollo Flight by the Boston Show Band , from which the later backing band of Gary Glitter , The Glitter Band emerged , achieved cult status. The broadcast date was initially on Monday (with a shortened repetition in the current turntable on Wednesday at 6.15 p.m.), later on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. (with the repetition on Thursday). Usually there were three episodes with "Race" (the hit parade) and then an interlude "Between the Races". At the end of the year there were some "between the races" in some years looking back at the last few years.

The best performers of the year were Cliff Richard (1963–1964), Pierre Brice (1965–1966), Lords (1967), Roy Black (1968), Barry Ryan (1969/1972), Ricky Shayne (1970–1971), Sweet (1973 / 1975), Renate Kern (1974), Bay City Rollers (1976–1978). International top stars were the Beatles , the Rolling Stones , the Beach Boys , the Bee Gees , Status Quo , Creedence Clearwater Revival , Alice Cooper , Simon & Garfunkel , Aretha Franklin and many others.
