features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 31 to 40 millimeters. The forewings are usually yellow-brown and show a brown central field, which is bounded by a dark brown, slightly constricted transverse line inward and another dark brown, indented transverse line to the outside and which also has a large black center. At the edge there is usually a line made up of black dots, which is sometimes incomplete. The apex is pointed. Occasionally there are also specimens that are gray-brown or black-brown in color. The contrast intensity of the middle field is also very variable. The hind wings are laid out in the respective color of the forewings, but mostly a bit lighter and often show a dark transverse line and a central spot. The suction trunk is stunted. The antennae of the males are combed on both sides, those of the females are thread-shaped. The thorax is very hairy in both sexes.

egg

The egg is square, flattened on the top and bottom. It initially has a greenish color and later turns into reddish tones. The Mikropylrosette is ten to twelve leaved.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are brownish in color. Sometimes a few dark spots can be seen on the back. Two small, pointed warts on the eleventh segment are characteristic.

Doll

The doll has a reddish brown color and shows two long terminal spines on the cremaster .

Similar species

The Helle Schmuckspanner ( Crocallis elinguaria ) clearly differs by the weaker indented transverse lines of the middle field. It is usually lighter in color in overall appearance. The main distinguishing features are compared below:

Geographical distribution and habitat

The sloe ornamental spanner occurs from Morocco through southern Europe to Asia Minor and further to the Caucasus , northern Iran and Turkmenistan . To the east the occurrence extends to the southern Urals . The species is absent in some western regions and in northern Europe. In the Alps it rises to an altitude of 900 meters. It prefers to inhabit warm slopes, bushes and hedge landscapes as well as forest edges.

Way of life

The moths that appear in a generation are nocturnal. The main flight time falls between August and October. They like to visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars live polyphagous on the leaves of various plants in May and June , for example blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ), common clematis ( Clematis vitalba ), hawthorn ( Crataegus ), buckthorn ( Frangula alnus ) or barberry ( Berberis vulgaris ). The egg hibernates.

Danger

The Schlehen-Schmuckspanner occurs in the central and southern German federal states and is classified in category 3 (endangered) on the Red List of Endangered Species . The risk status in Baden-Württemberg is unclear and needs to be investigated further.
