The mucous heads (Berycidae) are living bony fish in all oceans , at depths of 200 to 600 meters. They are probably missing in the eastern Pacific . The 50 centimeter long Nordic slime head ( Beryx decadactylus ) sometimes also migrates to the North Sea .
The big-eyed animals are, like many fish from deeper waters, of a reddish color. Their maximum length is 20 centimeters to one meter, depending on the species. The head, especially that of the fry, is spiked.
Fin formula : Dorsal IV – VII / 12–20, Anale IV / 12–17 ( Centroberyx ), IV / 25–30 ( Beryx ), Ventral I / 7–13 The hard rays of the dorsal fin get higher and higher from the first to the last.
