Shlomo Argov

Schlomo Argov ( Hebrew שלמה ארגוב, * December 14, 1929 in Jerusalem ; † February 23, 2003 ibid) was an Israeli diplomat.

Life

Schlomo Argov was born in Jerusalem in 1929. His family had lived there for seven generations. At a young age he joined Palmach . During the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, Argov was wounded in the fighting over the city of Safed .

Argov later studied political science at Georgetown University in Washington, DC , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1952 . He received his Master of Arts degree from the London School of Economics in 1955 .

Argov worked in the Prime Minister's office for several years before moving to the Foreign Ministry in 1959. His first tasks in the diplomatic service took him to the Israeli embassies in Ghana and Nigeria . From 1971 to 1974 Argov was ambassador to Mexico , and from 1977 to 1979 in the Netherlands . His next post as ambassador took him to London . In September 1979 he took up the post of Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom .

On June 3, 1982, he was assassinated by three members of the Abu Nidal Organization . Argov, who had previously attended a private dinner at the Dorchester Hotel in London with 80 other diplomats, was shot and seriously injured while leaving the hotel. With this attack, the Israeli government justified under Begin the invasion of Lebanon 1982 .

For the next 21 years, Argov was cared for at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem . He died there in February 2003 from the long-term effects of his injuries.
