from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The castle in Ambleville , a commune in the Val-d'Oise department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in the early 16th century. The castle has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique since 1926 . It is located around 65 kilometers northwest of Paris .

History and description

The castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century on the site of a fortress (documented since the 11th century) that defended the border with Normandy . The architect Jean Grappin created this building for Louis de Mornay .

In the 18th century the castle was rebuilt in the classicism style. In 1893, the wealthy art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer bought it and had it restored at great expense.

Behind the castle, the Marquise de Villefranche, the new owner, had a terrace-like park built in 1928, which is now one of the Jardin Remarquable , based on the Italian model .
