The Kotzenau Palace (Polish Pałac Chocianów ) is a Baroque palace in Chocianów in the Polkowicki powiat , Lower Silesian Voivodeship .

history

The castle was built in 1297 by order of Duke Bolko I von Schweidnitz and Jauer . In 1444 it became the property of the Dornhein family. In 1526 the place came under the rule of the crown of Bohemia . In the following years the owner of the place changed several times, for example Hans von Soran in 1580, Jakob von Schoenaich in 1584 , the von Nostitz family in 1587 and Aleksander von Stosch in 1613 .

The next owner Melchior Gottlob von Reden commissioned the architect Martin Frantz with the renovation of the castle, which took place from 1728 to 1732. A pompous baroque castle was created. Only a few walls and the tower remained of the old castle, which ends in several tapering column floors in a baroque crown that can be seen from afar. The castle has a ground floor, an upper floor and an attic under a tiled mansard roof with portholes . The facades are divided with Corinthian pilasters , the entrance portal is flanked like a triumphal arch by Corinthian columns. The castle has a full cellar. Two magnificent wing structures flank the main courtyard. On the east side there were French garden parterres, sweeping stairs and ramps descend here to an even larger rectangular basin, all around stepped lawn slopes, vases, statues and fountains. The whole thing is surrounded by tall trees like a ballroom.

In the 18th century, Kotzenau Castle came to a branch of the Schlodien line of the Burgraves of Dohna , who owned it until 1945. The medieval moated castle in neighboring Groß-Kotzenau initially also belonged to the Dohnas rule, but was sold to Count Rittberg- Modlau during the First World War , who sold it again when the estate was relocated around 1935.

The castle was only slightly damaged when it was conquered by the Red Army in 1945, but then remained unused and gradually fell into disrepair. It was finally sold in 1997 and has been refurbished ever since; the roof has already been re-covered while the rooms are still in ruins.

The castle was registered on April 28, 1950 under A / 3506/215 and on November 13, 1956 under 340 in the register of architectural monuments of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
