Dornhof Palace (2007)

Dornhof Castle is a castle in the municipality of Frauenstein in Carinthia . The listed building was built in the 15th century.

history

There was a castle near the site of today's Dornhof Palace, which is now called Altdornhof. It was first mentioned in a document in 1162 and must have been an impressive complex. But only a few remains of the wall remain about a kilometer away from it.

The current massive and castle-like structure was originally built in the late 15th century. In the second half of the 16th century some renovations and changes were made to the building, for the year 1560 a Martin (or Daniel) von Staudach was named as the “builder” of the castle, who belonged to the Staudacher family, which was widespread in Carinthia . whose roots can be traced back to the 13th century. According to the current state of research, however, it is assumed that the Dornhof was laid out in a simple form in the late 15th century and partially renewed and enlarged in the second half of the 16th century. In 1589 the property was acquired by the trade brothers Georg and Ehrenreich Megerl (Mägerl), who were raised to the nobility when they were taken over and were given the title “from and to Dornhof” from 1607 onwards. In the late 18th century, the castle was temporarily owned by the city of St. Veit . It was auctioned in 1797 and subsequently changed hands frequently. Dornhof Castle has belonged to the rural Kampl family since 1888.

Building description

The property is located a few hundred meters west of the village of Dornhof on a terrace on the eastern slope of the Lorenzi mountain . Dornhof Castle originally had four corner towers, of which only the two valley sides have been preserved. The entrance to the property is on the mountain side. The two remaining towers are connected by a corridor. In the south-facing, round tower is the palace chapel of Our Lady , which was built under Baron von Söll in 1732, fundamentally renovated in the neo-Gothic style from 1851 and finally re-consecrated in 1859. The life-size crucifix comes from the first half of the 18th century. The north tower with a rectangular floor plan carries a reaching over two floors corbel - bay .
