Around the year 1200 border guards were built in the area of the Pulsnitz and the Schwarzen Elster , because in this area the interests of the Mark Meissen and Upper and Lower Lusatia met . The former castle in Großkmehlen was as Castle Hill created on the side of the Meissner Pulsnitz. On the opposite side in Upper Lusatia, a complex was also built in Lindenau , from which Lindenau Castle developed.

Later, the castle in Großkmehlen became a stone with residential tower , attached Palas and gate tower changed. The resulting rectangular building enclosed an inner courtyard. Since the 14th century the family was of Lüttichau with the manor wholesale Kmehlen invested . In 1540 there was an inheritance division, as a result of which the castle complex was divided.

Today's castle is a Renaissance building from the mid-16th century that incorporates the previous building that existed at the time. During renovation work in the middle of the 17th century, baroque stucco work , probably by Italian artists, was added to the first floor .

The last owner of the castle was the princely family zu Lynar , who also owned Lindenau Castle. At the end of the Second World War she had to leave Großkmehlen and was expropriated in the course of the land reform . The castle subsequently served as a nursing and retirement home. From 1993 the building in need of renovation stood empty. Conservation measures began in 1997. That year the district became the owner. He was followed in 2000 by the Brandenburg Castle Society. The palace, palace gardens and manor will be financed with 6 million euros until 2013. Part of the castle is to become a community center for Großkmehlen, and part of it is available for rent. A depot for the volunteer fire brigade was also built on the site, and a thermal power station on the edge of the site.

Building description

Hunter's House

Moritzburg Castle served as a structural model . The exterior of the three-storey moated castle is characterized by high pitched roofs and Renaissance gables and is surrounded by a moat . It consists of the east and west buildings, two separate buildings that have been connected to one another by two small openings since the 19th century.

The castle has late Gothic elements that originate from its predecessor. These include cell vaults , arched curtain windows and door frames with bar overlap. They allow a connection to Arnold von Westfalen , the builder of the Albrechtsburg in Meißen . During the renovation work in the 17th century, a wall-tower wreath and a funnel roof truss were added to the medieval building.

The Jägerhaus is an outbuilding of the castle with a representative character. It is believed that it was used by the castle owners as a winter apartment because it was easier to heat. Just like the castle, the hunter's house is also divided into two parts.

Castle Park

Castle park with pavilion

The extensive castle park was built at the end of the 17th century. It grew together from 1717 through an oak-lined bridle path laid out by Johanna Eleonore von Lüttichau (later von Brause) along the Mühlengraben (Neue Pulsnitz) to Lindenau with the local park. Investigations relating to the preservation of garden monuments reveals an originally planned Baroque concept (including a "Lustschanze") in Großkmehlener Park, the center of which is the still preserved pavilion. The goal of the castle owner (Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH) is the gradual reconstruction of the complex. Other witnesses of the park's history are remains of the formal baroque planting (especially rows of oak trees), symmetrical avenues and the castle pond.
