Koberwitz Castle

Koberwitz Castle ( Polish Pałac w Kobierzycach ) is a castle in Kobierzyce (German Koberwitz ) in the powiat Wrocławski ( Breslau district ) in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland.

history

"Cobliwiz" was first mentioned in 1257 in a document from Duke Heinrich III of Breslau . mentioned. It is not known when a noble residence was established here. The first palace was built in 1730 by the Wroclaw City Syndic Samuel Regius von Königsdorff . From the beginning of the 19th century it was owned by the Tschirschky family , whose Koberwitz line expired in 1841. In 1850 the castle came to the Duisburg company vom Rath . Together with a new sugar factory, Gut Koberwitz became part of the corporate conglomerate "Johann Jakob vom Rath & Co Breslau".

From 1884 the castle was rebuilt as a residence and company branch in the neo-renaissance style according to plans by the architect Karl Schmidt (1836–1888). By 1881 the company became the largest land owner in Silesia . The company merged in 1904 with the company of the Schoeller family from Klettendorf to form “Vom Rath, Schoeller & Skene”.

After 1920 the castle was the residence of Carl Graf von Keyserlingk (1869–1928) and his wife Johanna Skene, at whose invitation Rudolf Steiner held a seminar here in 1924.

After the transition to Poland in 1945, the castle was used as the administrative headquarters of the now Polish sugar factory. Since 1997 it has been the seat of the municipal administration. Inside there is a small museum on regional history.

Building

When it was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, the castle was enlarged by two axes and side elevations. A representative central projection bears a dwelling and a roof turret .
