The Kreisbach Castle is a castle in Lower Austria in the city of Wilhelmsburg . It was first mentioned in writing in 1172 and has been revitalized for several years by the Kulturverein Schloss Kreisbach .

history

The castle, which was originally surrounded by a castle wall and had four towers, was built by Dietericus I. de Crewspach at the end of the 12th century . It then served the Lords of Kreisbach as their headquarters. The owners have changed several times over the centuries. It was owned by the Hohenberger, the Roggendorfer or the Jörger . In 1625 it became the property of Lilienfeld Abbey .

Revitalization since 1999

Since it was founded in 1999, the Kulturverein Schloss Kreisbach has been involved in the renovation of the castle, and in December 2000 the association signed a 99-year lease with the Lilienfeld Abbey as the owner.

For a long time, the only developed road at this point in the Kreisbach Valley, Landesstrasse 5117, ran through the castle gate. Since the passage was only 2.4 m wide and 2.9 m high, trucks had to avoid a gravel road. In October 2001 the almost one kilometer long bypass was opened to traffic, the costs amounted to 350,000 euros .

In 2004, the state of Lower Austria decided to support the renovation of the Anna Chapel with 53,000 euros, in the same year the cultural association was awarded the ORF Lower Austria cultural heritage prize for the exemplary renovation, especially the chapel .

The former castle warehouse has been reopened since 2008. It has a total area of 200 m², is equipped with a stage and serves as an event area.

Today's buildings

Only the east wing of the original castle has survived. There was a ballroom in it, which was converted into a chapel in 1681 and consecrated to Saint Anne . The chapel was decorated with stucco and paintings in the following years .

The three-winged, two-storey former estate is larger than the castle today and was built around 1600. The windows are partially equipped with sgraffito frames, the service wings with pointed cap barrel vaults . When the bypass around the castle was built in 2001, the foundation of the manor had to be underpinned and the masonry supported. In this area, the Kreisbach was also relocated over a length of 80 m from the estate.
