The Marquette Castle ( Dutch Kasteel Marquette ) is located in Heemskerk in the Dutch province of North Holland .

Heemskerk Castle

The house at Heemskerk dates from the middle of the 13th century and was part of the line of fortifications against the West Frisians . It was inhabited by the lords of Heemskerk, who exercised rule and jurisdiction in the fiefs of Heemskerk and Castricum .

The lords of Heemskerk regularly got into disputes with the neighboring lords and the farmers. In 1358, Heemskerk Castle was besieged by Dirk van Polanden. After eleven weeks, Wouter van Heemskerk had to capitulate. In 1380 the family got the castle back, but without feudal rights. In 1426 the castle was looted by farmers from Kennemer under the direction of Willem Nagel . In the 15th century the estate came into the possession of the van Assendelfts.

Marquette Castle

In 1610 the castle came into the possession of Daniël de Hertaing , Lord of Marquette, who in 1613 received approval from the States General to rename the property to Marquette , the place name of his origin in the county of Hainaut .
