The Schloss Matzen is in the Lower Austrian municipality of matzo Raggendorf .
The medieval castle was probably built at the same time as Matzen was founded in the 12th century. From 1551 in the possession of the Barons von Herberstein the castle was converted into a renaissance castle.
Today's castle is the result of these modern building measures, in particular the renovations by the Fünfkirchen family , who owned the castle between 1629 and 1700. By marriage, Matzen went to the Kinsky family . Christian Joseph Graf Kinsky (1776–1835) carried out another renovation in 1827 in order to transform the palace into a neo-Gothic castle with small towers and battlements in the Romantic style . Paul Graf Kinsky sold Matzen in 1931 to the Löw family, whose company Gustav and Wilhelm Löw were active in the alcohol production, for which many agricultural areas were leased in the area. At the end of the Second World War, it was looted and then fell into disrepair.
From 1966 to 1989 the castle was a branch of the Museum of Ethnology . The high-lying, irregular assembly with an arcade courtyard, three-story main building, crenellated walls and square tower is today in a structurally deplorable condition.
