Miromesnil Castle
The Miromesnil Castle ( French Château de Miromesnil ) is located in the municipality of Tourville-sur-Arques in the Seine-Maritime department , which is located in Normandy in northern France . The name of the castle goes back to the French nobleman Armand Thomas Hue, vicomte de Miromesnil , a minister of the Ancien Régimes under Louis XVI.
The castle is known as the birthplace of Guy de Maupassant . The writer was born on August 5, 1850 on the first floor of the building. His parents had rented the castle at the time.
The palace complex includes a large garden and an extensive palace park , which have been awarded the Jardin remarquable rating by the French Ministry of Culture. Since February 6, 1945, the palace building has been inscribed on the French list of monuments as a monument historique . The castle chapel belonging to the complex has been classified as an independent monument historique since July 1957.
history
Originally a castle belonging to the Dyel de Miromesnil family stood on the site of the castle. This was destroyed in 1589 by the troops of Duke de Mayenne after the Battle of Arques . Only a chapel and two towers have remained. At the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century the castle was built in its present form. These two castle towers were integrated when the new castle was built. They are part of the park facade, which was built in 1590 in the classic style of Henry IV. The Ehrenhof facade was built fifty years later in 1640.
