Mittelwalde Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mittelwalde Castle ( Polish: Zamek w Międzylesiu ) is a three-wing castle complex in Międzylesie (German Mittelwalde ) in the town and country municipality of the same name in the powiat Kłodzki in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .

history

The first castle at the current location was built by the Bohemian Duke Břetislav I on a pass road. In the 14th century the von Glaubitz family came into feudal possession of the castle. The castle was destroyed in the Hussite Wars . In 1472 the castle became fiefdom of the Tschischwitz family.

In 1538 the castle came to Hans Johann von Tschirnhaus , whose family built a renaissance castle on the site of the castle in 1580–1590 , possibly using medieval fragments and using the partially preserved so-called "black tower".

In the 17th century the castle was damaged during the Thirty Years War . In 1635 the castle came to the imperial count Ferdinand von Althann . In the years 1686–1695, the “Old Castle” was expanded on its north side by two building wings in the early Baroque style, which was designed by Jacobo Carove. The city side received a facade structured with pilaster strips and blown gables above the windows. As a final construction measure, the New Palace was connected to the Corpus Christi parish church ( Kościół Bożego Ciała ) by an arcade .

The castle was extensively restored in 1928 and was largely undamaged when Silesia fell to Poland in 1945 after World War II. In the following years it was used as a holiday and camp center by several institutions. In 1974 it was hit by a fire again and after 2008 it was converted into a hotel.

architecture

The entire complex consists of two parts: the older polygonal Renaissance wing with a tower, which is grouped around a small courtyard, and the two newer Baroque wings, the interiors of which are covered with barrel vaults and decorated with stucco . The entrance gate with an artfully crafted portal and fragments of sgraffito decorations on the outer facades also dates from the Renaissance period.
