Rixensart Castle
The Rixensart Castle ( French Château de Rixensart ) is a castle in the Belgian municipality of the same name in the Walloon province of Walloon Brabant , southeast of Brussels. The castle and its outbuildings have been classified as a historical monument since May 15, 1964 .
The Rixensart estate was first mentioned in 1217 and belonged to the Limal family before being sold to the Croy family in 1536.
In 1586, Charles de Grave, his daughter married Philippe-Hippolyte de Spinola , Count of Bruay, Grandee of Spain , and Governor of Lille , Douai and Orchies. It is believed that the current appearance of the castle was completed at this time.
The property passed in 1715 from the Countess von Bruay, widow of Philippe de Spinola, into the hands of the Merode family , who have held it privately since then. After the death of Prince Henri de Merode, the castle was offered for sale by the heirs in 2018, but was taken over shortly afterwards by his nephew Charles-Louis Prince von Merode , who founded the Fondation Merode Rixensart for this purpose . It will be used for weddings and events in the future.
The idea for the design of the garden is based on a sketch by André Le Nôtre , the garden architect of the French King Louis XIV , who designed the gardens of Versailles.
