Castle Roith (also Roith outdoor seating)

Roith Castle (Gmunden) , also called Roith Free Seat , was probably built around 1596. Emperor Rudolf II raised Roith to an aristocratic patio . It is located in the town of Gmunden , Traunsteinstraße 87, in the Gmunden district in Upper Austria . An earlier name of the small castle was Sardagna , named after the Rittmeister Freiherr Geza von Sardagna, who appeared as the owner from 1914 to 1942.

Chronicle of the owners

The estate "in der Reuth" was owned by the Polheimers in the 16th century ; in 1587, Hans Paumgartner owned it. In 1597 Roith came from Freiherr Friedrich von Pollheim to Siegmund Jäger and his wife Margaretha. Then Roith came to the Seeauer von Hallstatt . From these it was given either on the Kaufweg or as a personal item to Georg Albert Plaß von Mühlleiten. After Plaß, the Seeauers, who had meanwhile risen to the rank of count, became owners of Roith again.

In 1719, Count Josef Ehrenreich von Seeau, parish priest of Gmunden, sold it to Johann Adam Aigner, a citizen of Gmunden. Via his daughter, Roith came to the imperial toll clerk Johann Paul Lichtenauer through marriage. After his death, the widow sold the property to Rittmeister Jakob von Holzofen in 1753, who in turn sold it to Franz Xaver Gangl in 1770. Since he died without an heir, Roith was publicly auctioned off and came to the Gmunden citizen Johann Nepomuk Hörner. Hörner was raised to the nobility in 1814 and was named "Edler von Roith". His heirs sold Roith in 1843 to the Viennese notary Gustav Faber, whose wife was a great-granddaughter of Hörner. From 1914 Baron Geza von Sardagna was the owner. During the Second World War, a youth hostel was set up in the castle, and the castle grounds were used as a gardening center.

From 1968 the owners were Franz and Rosi Prechtl, who made Roith a castle hotel. The hotel then came to the Asamer Group, with a renovation carried out in 2008, but the hotel was spun off from the holding company in 2013 and taken over by Hans Asamer. In 2015 the hotel was closed and in 2016 it was sold to an agricultural trading company in Innviertel.

architecture

On the edge of the Gmundner Bay, opposite Ort Castle, is the Roith Castle. It is a three-story building with a saddled hipped roof . A heptagonal tower protruding from the wall structure slightly rises above the roof. On the lake side there are two curved attic gables . The coat of arms of Georg Albert Plaß and that of his wife Regina from 1659 can be found on the coat of arms stone above the entrance gate; probably a sign that he has had structural changes made.

An entrance hall leads to a courtyard open at the rear, which is surrounded by a horseshoe on the three sides of the building. From there you get to a terrace with a remarkable view of the Traunsee . Viewing is not possible.
