history

Old castle

Old Teufen Castle

In the Middle Ages, the men built from depths near the strategically important estuary of Toss in the Rhine two castles, old depths and high depths. Later, the families zum Thor (1315–1550), von Ulm (1550–1600) and von Meiss (1600–1798) lived in the castles and held the lower court rule (theft and sacrilege).

In 1638 the Lords of Meiss built an imposing castle on the site of Altenteufen Castle, the main building of which had a stepped gable . The invasion of French troops in 1798 and the establishment of the Helvetic Republic meant the loss of jurisdiction.

In 1808 a famous guest lived at Teufen Castle, Salomon Landolt , the bailiff of Greifensee , who was immortalized in the novel of the same name by Gottfried Keller . « So he [Salomon Landolt] sold his estate in der Enge (district of the city of Zurich) and moved to his brother-in-law in Teufen Castle. He was made for country life and would never have been happy in the city. In Teufen he found what he was looking for, he often rode out, hunted, painted and dealt with agriculture. But his strength decreased from year to year. »( Diethelm Zimmermann )

In 1838 Gottfried von Meiss, the son of the last court lord, sold his entire manorial estate, the stepped gable castle including the large stables that he had erected in 1820, to Heinrich Hürlimann on Rosenberg in Feldbach. The tower at Freienstein and its surrounding area and a piece of vines in the Engelishalde in Teufen remained unsold and in the possession of Junker von Meiss. In 1840 Hürlimann sold the entire estate to Baron von Müllermann from Schlettstadt ( Sélestat , Alsace). The baron lived only a short time in Teufen. In 1843 Johann Heinrich Merian-von der Mühl from Basel took over the castle complex and sold it to his brother Eduard Merian in 1850 for 132,000 francs.

Merian had the castle building with the distinctive stepped gable demolished - with the exception of the agricultural building - and had today's castle built in neo-Gothic style between 1850 and 1856 . In 1856, the canton of Zurich bought the entire system for a "new value" of CHF 300,000. In 1872, Zurich appointed the tenant Johann Jakob Keller, who had been foreman at the Strickhof agricultural school until then , as estate manager. In 1874 the canton sold the entire property to him. An inn was run in the building from 1876 to 1905, and the brickworks operated until after the Second World War. The Schloss Teufen winery is still owned by the descendants of Johann Jakob Keller.

New Teufen Castle

« On the hill, in the immediate vicinity of the palace complex, Eduard Merian wanted to have a palace-like splendid villa built in the English neo-Gothic style. It was worked on for six years, but in 1856 the work was suddenly stopped because Merian had been incapacitated at the instigation of concerned heirs. »( Swisscastles )

The striking building remained unfinished for a long time and served as a tool and car shed for decades. Only a new owner completed the work from 1975 to 1984. From 2007 to 2018 the new castle was owned by Roland von Sayn-Wittgenstein . He renovated the castle with a neo-Gothic color scheme and design. Since he was heavily in debt, the castle was taken over by Bank Sarasin in 2016 and is still for sale in 2020.
