Troy Castle

The Troja Castle (Czech Zámek Troja or Trojský zámek ) is located in Prague in the Czech Republic , in the northern part of Troja .

history

Wenzel Adalbert Graf von Sternberg ( Václav Vojtěch ze Šternberka ) had a summer residence built in Troy in the Baroque style from 1679 to 1685 based on designs by Jean Baptiste Mathey , presumably earlier plans by Giovanni Domenico Orsi de Orsini were taken into account. The construction manager was Silvestro Carlone .

The decoration of the castle with wall and ceiling paintings was mainly done by the Italians Francesco and Giovanni Marchetti and the Antwerp brothers Abraham and Isaak Godyn , including the apotheosis of the House of Habsburg in the central Great Hall .

Location and building

The castle is located on a raised terrace north of the Vltava and at the foot of the slopes rising up to Bohnice and is now embedded between the Prague Zoo in the west, vineyards in the north (followed by the Botanical Garden of Prague to the north ) and the two castle gardens in the east and west South.

It consists of several structures: a central corps de logis with two stubby side wings facing the castle garden in the south, farm buildings and stables in the north, orangeries on the south side of the garden. In particular, the facade of the Corps de Logis facing the garden with the outside staircase in front is one of the outstanding achievements of the baroque secular building in Bohemia. The Dresden sculptors George and Paul Heermann were involved in the sculptural design of the staircase .

Fountain in front of the castle

Between the castle and the Vltava there is a small baroque castle garden based on the French model with a large central fountain. In the east there is a baroque orchard, in the middle of which there is a labyrinth at the intersection of the paths.

Bohemian art from the 19th century and historical costumes from the collections of the Art Museum are exhibited in the castle. Another exhibition shows old prints and maps from the Far East. Since 2011 another permanent exhibition has been set up on the pioneers of modern Czech art under the title " Akordy modernosti " (German: " Anklänge der Modernität").
