Tynnelsö Castle is a magnificent building in the Swedish municipality of Strängnäs in the historic province of Södermanland . Most of the estate is on the island of Selaön in Lake Mälaren , but the castle is on the smaller island of Tynnelsö.

The castle has belonged to the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, History and Antiquities since 1940 . It is administered by the Reichsantiquaramt .

Tynnelsö first appeared in writings in 1282 and in 1306 the estate belonged to the Strängnäs diocese . It is believed that Bishop Tord Gunnarsson had the first stone house built at the end of the 14th century. In the 1490s, under Bishop Kort Rogge, a new stone house was built, which today represents the lower floors of the castle. The estate was conquered by Gustav Wasa in 1522 , who transferred it to his royal possession in 1527. He often visited the castle and his wife Margareta Eriksdotter Leijonhufvud died here on August 26, 1551. Later Tynnelsö came into the possession of Gustav Wasa's 10th child, Duke Karl , who gave the building in the 1590s the appearance that it still has today.

Tynnelsö later belonged to Duke Carl Phillip and Queen Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg . Queen Christina gave it to her cousin Elisabet Gyllenhielm in 1636, but in 1681 the estate was already under Charles XI. drafted again for the crown. After Charles XII. In 1725 he had paid a debt to Anna Woynarowska with the castle, the building fell into disrepair. In 1800 the Hebbe family had the estate converted into a family entrepre- neurship and the facilities were repaired shortly afterwards. Certain parts were demolished and the castle was given a lantern , which strongly shapes the appearance. Later a large garden with fruit trees was laid out around the castle.

The castle has been classified as Byggnadsminne since 1966 .
