Wegleiten Castle after a copper engraving by Michael Wening from 1721

The former Wegleiten Castle stood in a pond in the Wegleiten district of Ried im Innkreis in Upper Austria .

history

Pond at the former moated castle Wegleiten

The earliest documented mention of Wegleiten (Wegerleiten) refers to its first owner Reginhart de Wegleitten, a Passau ministerial who received 30  serfs and the property in Wegleiten from an Engelbert von Struben before his journey to Jerusalem . The other verifiable owners were the Ahaimer , who were the caretakers at Ried Castle at the time. Documented evidence is Heinrich IV of Aham (1310), Georg von Aham (1364), Georg II of Aham (1403–1407) and his brother Wilhelm I (1416–1418). The successors to Wegleiten were the Klöl, who belonged to market judges of Ried and the patriciate of Ried between 1326 and 1433 . The Perger (1464-1518) followed the Klöl, with a Hanns Perger carer at Neuburg am Inn Castle . Between 1518 and 1700, Wegleiten belonged to the Ried bourgeois family, the Magerl, who held high offices in Ried and Passau. Friedrich Josef Xaver Magerl was raised to the baron status in 1717. After the death of the last Magerl, Johann Nepomuk Freiherr von Magerl († 1790), Wegleiten went over to the Tattenbachs . They had a large number of possessions and administrative centers, so they let Wegleiten Castle fall into disrepair. Under Count Josef Ferdinand von Tattenbach (1723–1802) the castle was demolished and a hunting lodge was built in its place.

As can be seen in the engraving by Michael Wening from 1721, Wegleiten was a two-storey moated castle made up of two components with a steep hipped roof . The bell tower on the roof suggests a house chapel . The main building had protruding, tower-shaped additions embedded in the roof structure. A wooden bridge led to the entrance gate in the inclined second part of the building, which led to another gate on the land side. That formed the entrance to a picket fence . Inside the fence was a small crenellated tower. There is nothing left of the former castle today.

The former palace square is located directly behind the Ried train station. The hunting lodge erected at this point operates under the address Wegleiten 1. At this point there is now a property in need of renovation. In addition, there is a pond, probably a remnant of the once around the castle leading moat .
