The castle mill is a watermill in Flechtingen in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The castle mill has existed as a water mill since at least 1311. The name Schlossmühle is derived from the nearby Flechtingen Castle . The building in its current form was erected in 1695. The von Schenk family carried out the renovation with overshot water wheel . An existing coat of arms stone dates from this time. All tenants of the mill had water rights and controlled the inflow from the lakes directly upstream via a weir. With this inflow, the mill could be operated all year round.

During the 19th century the substance of the building, especially the upper floor and the roof structure, was renewed. At the end of the 19th century, the water wheel was replaced by a suction gas motor . A Francis turbine was later used. The mill was connected to the power grid in the 20th century. It was in operation with its own miller until the 1970s. Then it was taken over by the local LPG and operated as a grist mill until the 1990s.

In 2003, with support from the European Union , the restoration of the castle mill began. Unnecessary outbuildings were demolished and the building walls were sandblasted and grouted. The water wheel was also re-ordered and the mill ditch cleaned. The new water wheel is designed as a medium-sized wheel. A shotgun can be used again after its restoration. In 2004 the castle mill was able to reopen.

Furnishing

The gear cellar with a restored drive is located on the lower floor of the mill; the new waterwheel is connected to it. All the machines in the mill are driven from here via gears or transmissions .

The water wheel on the outside has a diameter of six meters. 60 water containers with a capacity of 33 liters each are attached to the wheel. The wheel makes about four to six revolutions per minute. The power is about 6 hp .

Above the gear cellar is the stone floor with the shot passages and the roller mills . In addition to the functional shot tunnel, there is a second one, on which the technical functions can be traced. The mill's systems are put into operation regularly on the German Milling Day .

The former shipping floor is located above the stone floor. The castle shop is housed in it today. The attic serves as an exhibition space. There are exhibits on the history of Flechtingen, the geology of the Flechtinger ridge and a replica of a miller's room, which is supposed to represent the living conditions of a miller's companion in the mill. The Flechtingen local history association is also housed in the mill .
