history

Emmaus am Wienerberg is a young parish and parish church. The area on the southern slope of the Wienerberg was used for clay mining and brick production until the 20th century. After they were closed, most of the southern part of the Wienerberg was designed as a natural recreation area in the 1980s , while a spacious car-free housing estate for around 7,000 people was planned between Friedrich-Adler-Weg and the Zwillingsee recreation area. From the beginning a church was planned in the settlement.

The site, which originally belonged to the parish of St. Nikolaus in Inzersdorf , was added in 1989 as a branch of the parish Salvator am Wienerfeld . Their territory comprised the entire southern Wienerberg between Eibesbrunnergasse in the west and Neilreichgasse in the east, the border between the 10th and 23rd districts in the south and the area below the built-up area at the height of the mountain in the north. The church Emmaus am Wienerberg was built between 1990 and 1992 in the center of the new residential complex on Wienerberg according to plans by Otto Häuselmayer , who was also in charge of planning the entire housing estate. The church on Tesarekplatz was built in the immediate vicinity of Otto-Probst-Straße, where there is also an elementary school run by Gustav Peichl , a day care center run by Heinz Tesar and residential buildings with shops and bars. In 1992 the expositur was raised to the parish. As part of the reform of the parish structure in the Archdiocese of Vienna, the parish moved from City Deanery 10 to City Deanery 23 on November 29, 2015 .

Building description

The simple church building is a free-standing rectangular building, the arched roof of which rests on steel supports. The low bell tower barely protrudes from the area. Under the roof there is a row of windows all around that illuminate the interior. The organ loft above the entrance is a wooden structure. The pews are lined up in a semicircle around the central altar area on the west side. The only adornment of the interior are large-format pictures of the Stations of the Cross by Veronica Schaller from 2006.
