Salvatorian Church to the Holy Apostles (Vienna)
The Salvatorian Church of the Holy Apostles is the Roman Catholic parish church of the parish of Christ on Wienerberg in the 10th Viennese district of Favoriten . It is located at Salvatorianerplatz 1 in the Inzersdorf-Stadt district .
history
The order of the Salvatorians , which had been working in Favoriten since 1892, had plans for a large church on Laxenburger Strasse . As a first step, a small monastery and an emergency church were built, which were a little off the road. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Mayor Karl Lueger , and the consecration took place on July 14, 1901. However, since the planned large church building did not come about, the front area of the Salvatorianerplatz on Laxenburger Strasse remained free and is now used as a parking lot. In 1907 additions were made to the emergency church and the temporary structure gradually became permanent. In 1937 it was elevated to the status of a parish church, which was accompanied by the construction of a small bell tower. The interior of the church was redesigned in 1972. The Salvatorians run a day care center on site. On September 1st, the parishes of Salvator on Wienerfeld and St. Francis of Sales were merged with the parish of St. Apostles to form the parish of Christ on Wienerberg. Since then, the Salvatorian Church has been the parish church of Christ on Wienerberg.
Building description
The late historical church building is located on the east side of Salvatorianerplatz, to which two two-storey transverse wings are attached to the west. On their fronts there are portals with pointed aedicular frames and romanized columns. The wooden doors themselves are covered with wrought iron. High arched windows dominate the church building.
The interior consists of a flat-roofed hall that receives light from two sides. A wooden organ gallery lies in the south. In the middle of the west side is the altarpiece with the depiction of the Last Supper by Franz Elsner. The pews are assigned to the altar from three sides. On the north side of the hall there is a large-format textile picture depicting the sending of the apostles by Henrique de Arnoldi. Other pieces of equipment include an oil painting of the Heart of Jesus from the 19th century, a stone bust of Saint Anthony of Padua with the baby Jesus and a bronze figure of Mary of Sorrows by Yrsa von Leistner .
