Castle portal

The palace portal from the large to the small courtyard in Dresden was a portal in the large courtyard of the Dresden Residence , built by Johann Georg Starcke in 1682 with figures that had been designed by the brothers Jeremias and Conrad Max Süssner. The portal destroyed in 1945 was one of the examples of the “great portal architecture of Dresden” . This portal formed the other side of the castle portal in the small castle courtyard .

description

The portal was a round arch with a large capstone , the Kurschwerter in a cartridge showed. The round arch was flanked by two double pilasters . The double pilasters stood on a common base with the double columns of the Tuscan order . The four columns carried an architrave , triglyph frieze , metopes with rosette decorations . On the architrave was a cornice with a balcony, which had a wrought-iron grille as a parapet . A door flanked by two windows led to this balcony. On both sides of the door there was a richly decorated ornament as a door frame. Above the door there was a segment of the gable as a door canopy , in which a Juno's head was. The balcony door was flanked by two sandstone statues ( Hercules and Minerva ) that rested on pedestals . Between the two pedestals, a wrought-iron grille with the name of Johann Georg III was attached as a parapet for the balcony .
