Schlumbergera opuntioides is a species of plant in the genus Schlumbergera from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Schlumbergera opuntioides grows epiphytically or lithophytically with richly branched shoots and can form groups up to 1.2 meters high. The shoot sections, which become round and woody with age, are 1.5 to 7 centimeters long, 0.5 to 3 centimeters wide and up to 0.9 centimeters thick. There are numerous woolly areoles on them , from which stiff thorns arise in old age . The 5 to 80 thorns are variable, stiff or soft and bristle-like. Sometimes they are missing.
The zygomorphic flowers are roughly at right angles to the shoots. They are more or less pink-purple in color, grow up to 6 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 4.5 centimeters. The pericarpel is five- to seven-sided. The spherical to square or pentagonal fruits are green.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Schlumbergera opuntioides is common in the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo and Minas Gerais at altitudes of 1,600 to 2,200 meters. The first description as Epiphyllum opuntioides was published in 1905 by Albert Löfgren (1854-1918) and Per Karl Hjalmar Dusén (1855-1926). David Richard Hunt placed them in the genus Schlumbergera in 1969 .
Schlumbergera opuntioides was listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species from 2002 as " Near Threatened (NT) ". H. classified as low risk. After the list was revised in 2013, the species will be classified as " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. listed as endangered.
