The narrow-calamus or dwarf calamus ( Acorus gramineus ) is a plant from the genus calamus ( Acorus ) within the family Kalmusgewächse (Acoraceae). This marsh plant is found in East Asia, including China.

It is also used as a houseplant and garden plant. The rhizomes are consumed as a vegetable in Japan.

Vegetative characteristics

The narrow-leaved calamus (also called grassy calamus and grass-like calamus) is a perennial herbaceous plant . It forms slender rhizomes . The dark green leaves are linear (ensiform) with a length of mostly 20 to 45 (15 or 55) centimeters.

Generative characteristics

The hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The flowers are yellowish, yellow-green or slightly whitish.

Chromosome number

There is always diploidy with the chromosome number 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The narrow-leaved calamus is native to the eastern Himalayas to Japan and the Philippines.
