The village Schmidighischere (also Schmidigenhäusern) is the largest village in the Swiss Binntal . It belongs to the municipality of Binn and is often incorrectly referred to as Binn, although there is no place called Binn in the Binntal.

history

The village has always belonged to the Binn valley and therefore shares its political and religious history. It is located at the point where the old road crosses the valley. The stone arch bridge over the Binna dates from 1564.

Many prehistoric graves have been found in and around the village, which suggests an early settlement. For example, nine Celtic and Gallo-Roman graves were found during the construction of the Hotel Ofenhorn on the uf em Acher site in 1881 and another 15 during the expansion in 1897.

The first written mention of the village, at that time still as Schmidingerro huseren , took place in 1437. Due to its central location in the valley, it became the seat of the court bank and thus the secular center of the valley. Only the church center was not here, because the parish church is to the west in the Wileren district .

building

Anthony's Chapel

Immediately next to the bridge is the chapel of St. Anthony of Padua. It was built in 1690.

Hotel Ofenhorn

The Hotel Ofenhorn was built in 1881 and the rear was extended in 1897. The three-storey house is a typical hotel building from the Belle Epoque and is also the largest building in the Binn Valley. The hotel was built as a mountain hotel with pure summer operation and is still operated today. The hotel was closed after about a hundred years and threatened to deteriorate. As a result, the Pro Binntal cooperative was founded in 1987, which has dedicated itself to the preservation and professional renovation of the building, which has been under protection since 1990. Thanks to the cooperative, the hotel will be open again in summer. The hotel also shows some items from the Celtic and Gallo-Roman tombs that were discovered during the construction.
