Schmidt is a small impact crater on the front of the moon on the edge of Mare Tranquillitatis , south of Ritter and west of Sabine . It is bowl-shaped and hardly eroded.
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt , the German optician Bernhard Schmidt and the Russian astronomer Otto Juljewitsch Schmidt .
