Schmittentunnel

The Schmittentunnel is the bypass tunnel of Zell am See and the road tunnel of the Pinzgauer Straße  (B 311) in the Austrian state of Salzburg .

The Schmittentunnel has a length of 5,111 meters and runs west parallel to the north-south running city passage of Zell am See. The tunnel is single-tube, has two lanes and is operated in oncoming traffic with no overtaking and a speed limit of 80 km / h. Bicycles and mopeds are forbidden to drive in the tunnel and its access roads. The tunnel removes (motorized) through traffic from the - previously only - city transit and opens up a non-intersection, comfortable and fast route as an alternative that has only negligible detours.

The route with tunnel begins at the confluence of the B168 / B311 in the west of the Zell am See-Süd district . A half-connection about 1.3 km further north connects the old town of Zell am See and parts of the city still further north. The tunnel route runs in the north a little beyond the northern municipal boundary of the city.

The city passage and the semi-connection are possible with all types of vehicles without a particular limit. (As of November 2019)

Construction work on the tunnel began in 1993 and the breakthrough took place on July 18, 1994 . It was completed in 1996, and the construction costs amounted to around 700 million schillings (around 51 million euros ).
