The jewelry boxfish ( Aracana ornata ) lives close to the coast on the south coast of Australia , from Western Australia to Tasmania and Victoria at depths of 5 to 20, more rarely up to 60 meters. It belongs to the more original boxfish subfamily Aracaninae, in which the shell between the base of the dorsal and anal fin and the caudal fin is not closed.
It feeds on small invertebrates such as hover shrimp and other small crustaceans. Jewelry boxfish grow to be 15 centimeters long. The fish show a clear sexual dimorphism . While the males show a dense pattern of blue, darkly circled spots on a yellow background on their body sides, the females have wavy stripes on their flanks. Ornamental boxfish are loners.
