The aracanidae are a family of pufferfish relatives (Tetraodontiformes). They were considered to be more original than the boxfish (Ostraciidae) and are also known as the original boxfish or, because of the splendid color scheme of some species, as jewelry boxfish .

features

The fish generally have a higher back shape than the species of boxfish. Their shell does not include the base of the dorsal and anal fin. On their ventral side, they usually have a more or less clearly developed, central edge, which the boxfish lack. Their caudal fin has eleven primary rays . They become 11 to 33 centimeters long.

distribution

Most Aracanidae species live in the seas around southern Australia at depths of up to 200 meters. There are also some species in Tasmania , New Zealand , New Caledonia , the Solomon Islands , in Japan and in the East China Sea , in the Maldives , in the western Indian Ocean on the Mascarene Ridge between Mauritius and the Seychelles , in Mozambique and South Africa .

Tribal history

The aracanidae are the genera Plectocretacius from the upper chalk of Lebanon and Eolactoria and Proaracana from the middle Eozän of Monte Bolca fossil handed.
