Schnapps bridge
The Schnapsbrücke is a pedestrian bridge protected as a cultural monument over the Lenne River in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Werdohl in the Märkisches Kreis , Sauerland .
history
The Schnapsbrücke has its origins on the basis of a private initiative by the Werdohl innkeeper Otto Spelsberg. In order to give the workers of the Kugel & Berg company (today ThyssenKrupp VDM ) access to his restaurant, he built a wooden walkway over the Lenne. The jetty was soon given the name Schnapsbrücke in the population because of the workers' preferred consumption of alcoholic beverages.
This construction was of a temporary nature, so that it was regularly washed away after floods . The wood that was taken from the water was collected by finders and bought again by Spelsberg in order to use it to rebuild the bridge repeatedly.
In 1911 a fixed reinforced concrete bridge was built in place of the temporary structure, which is still called the Schnaps Bridge today.
