The Schnatermann is part of the Rostock Heath in the area of the Hanseatic City of Rostock . In the west it borders the Breitling , a bodden-like widening of the Unterwarnow shortly before its confluence with the Baltic Sea. In the Middle Ages, a lot of wood was felled in this area for shipbuilding and construction. To monitor the amount of wood exported, the city that owned the forest (and still belongs to) installed barriers on all roads. The guards at these barriers were called Schnatermanns . The word is made up of the old Slavic schnat for border and the German man . Over time, the name of the border guard carried over to the guarded area and then to a forester's house located on the edge of the area .

The Schnatermann Revierförsterei, located directly on the Breitling, began offering food and drinks to tourists in the summer season at the end of the 19th century. Soon a jetty was built and regular excursions with excursion steamers and boats from Warnemünde and the Rostock city port to the Schnatermann were offered. The restaurant on the Schnatermann has also become a popular destination for sailors and motorboat enthusiasts.

Today there is a sports boat harbor and a small sandy beach on the Schnatermann. An excursion restaurant in the old forester's house closed in 2017/2018 and reopened in 2019. A large part of the area belongs to the Schnatermann nature reserve . In the summer season, the Schnatermann is called by passenger ships on the Warnemünde - Schnatermann - Markgrafenheide line .

The Schnatermann is the scene of Ina Seidel's poem Regenballade , which was set to music by Achim Reichel on the LP Regenballade in 1978 .
