The Schnatermann nature reserve is a 54 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one kilometer south of Markgrafenheide on the east bank of the Breitling . It covers a section of the area known as Schnatermann . It was placed under protection on December 12, 1957 with the aim of protecting and developing a characteristic forest location on the Rostock Heath . The reserve was reduced in size in 1961.

The current state of the area is assessed as good. Thanks to a nearby restaurant on the Breitling, there are significant numbers of visitors to the area in the summer months.

Several paths lead from the excursion restaurant into the protected area.

history

The areas range from a eastern outwash plain and the west upcoming moraine with glacial till . Dunes blown up in places led to an undulating relief of the terrain. The low height of the areas leads to periodic flooding of a large part of the areas. The area is listed as Lange Heide on the Schmettauschen map from 1788. Extensive plantings with oak took place in the 18th century. The areas were used as forest pasture. In the 19th century, a ditch system was created to drain the land. In addition, a protective forest was planted against strong storms from the northwest. The area underwent significant hydrological changes in 1969/70 when the branch canal was created for the dredged material dump. The Schnatermann has been a popular excursion destination since the 20th century.

Flora and fauna

The reserve is mainly forested with oak , beech , birch and alder , which have a high proportion of deadwood . In the undergrowth there are Schattenblume , Carex Pilulifera , Winkelsegge , woodruff and purple moor grass . Holly and German honeysuckle indicate that the areas are close to the coast. In the area live Moor Frog , tree frog , grass snake , slow worm and Waldeidechse . Notable bird species are stock dove , black woodpecker , middle woodpecker and miniature flycatcher . In the area 39 snail species were detected, including anisus spirorbis , Toothless whorl snail , clubshaped door snail .
