Schock is a German music group named after the front man Michael Schock. Musically, the formation can be ascribed to alternative rock and the new German hardness .

history

founding

The music group Schock was founded in Thuringia in 1999 and consisted of former members of the bands Morningrise, Burning Paradise, Tatmotiv Angst and Ravendark. Under the name Morningrise, a promo EP called Traumwelt Leben was recorded in the studio of “Mozart” ( Umbra et Imago ) in order to attract the attention of labels and promoters. The EP included versions of some songs from the debut album, Awakened , among other things .

Schock has been on an indefinite pause since 2013.

In the same year Michael Schock and Lars Buchenau founded the joint band project Kimkoi, which initially mainly played acoustic reinterpretations of shock songs. In the meantime, Kimkoi has "found each other musically" and is on the road with up to seven musicians.

Awakened

At the beginning of 2000, a suitable partner was found with the label “Zeitbombe” in order to go into the studio under the name Schock (the name Schock comes from the founding member and still front man Michael Schock). An experienced producer was quickly found in Ralph Quick ( Die Happy , H-Blockx ). The album Awakened was recorded and mixed in the Prinzipal Studios in 6 weeks. Awakening was released in early 2001 and the song Von dir was released as a single. Appearances and tours as the opening act for groups like In Extremo and The Inchtabokatables followed, as well as appearances at festivals such as the Wave-Gotik-Treffen (2001) and the M'era Luna Festival . In 2001, Schock was voted Newcomer of the Year by readers of the music magazine Orkus . In 2001/2002 more than 170 concerts were played in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Glamor

The next album Glamor followed in 2003 , from which the single Tanz! was decoupled. The CD was produced and recorded by Roger Grüninger. Glamor could not match the success of the debut. Reasons for this, according to the band's statements in interviews, were the increased pressure of the label at the time, marketing and promotion mishaps and disagreement about the musical direction and further development.

Shortly after the publication of Glamor , the founding members Tobias Kirchner, Vladislav Schröder and Silvio Buch left the band for private reasons. A replacement was quickly found in Lars Buchenau and Matthias Fahrig, who had been helping out on various tours and gigs on the guitar since 2002. There was no permanent keyboard player in the future.

After a positive concert season in 2003 came the first low point in the band's history. In 2004, main songwriter and drummer Tobias "Hello" Helbich left the band. Helbich and Kirchner, the musical veins up to now, were no longer satisfied with the development of the band and wanted to devote themselves more to their private interests.

In the remainder of 2004/2005 they found a replacement on drums in Marco Wenzel in order to be able to play the upcoming concerts. In 2005 he was replaced by Matthias Keil.

Hold still

It was quickly decided to go to the studio that same year to record the third album. That meant that in a very short time 16 songs were completely rewritten, rearranged and prepared as far as possible to go to the studio with the best possible preparation. Tobias Helbich was chosen again as producer. The mood within the band was described as very relaxed during this, as there were no time limits, there was no time to experiment and there was full creative control. The entire recording process therefore took six weeks. Stylistically, the album differs greatly from its predecessors, as for the first time synthesizers were completely dispensed with with the exception of a few subtle timbres and the focus is on guitar work.

In terms of the text, Halt moves silently either in first-person narratives, experienced events and fictional events. The listener is usually left in the dark about it and should form their own judgment in order to deal more intensively with the content.

Shock at the Wave Gotik Treffen 2009

In June 2008 the album Halt was released in self-distribution. This was followed by appearances at several major festivals in Germany and Switzerland (including WGT, Hexentanz), concerts and the like. a. with Lacrimas Profundere, Last Instance, Mono Inc., Equlibrium and 2 club tours.

cosmos

From spring to autumn 2009 new pieces were written and demos were produced. In December 2009, Schock went back to the studio until February 2010 to record their fourth album Kosmos . The album was produced by Schock in cooperation with her old companion Tobias Helbich. On November 19, 2010, the first single Babylon was released. On March 18, 2011, the fourth long player Kosmos was released on the label " Schönklang ".

Apocalypse Now

In autumn 2012 a new EP called Apocalypse Now was announced for December 30, 2012 , on which there are six pieces including three reinterpretations of well-known songs, two new songs and a new mix of the song Apocalypse Now . As a reason for the reinterpretation of old songs, the band stated that they were no longer satisfied with these songs on the previous albums and wanted to settle this with the EP. Mirko Ertmer was hired as producer and mixing engineer. The EP was presented with the new video of the same name on December 30, 2012 at the year-end concert.
