Schokker refers to a Dutch type of ship that was in use until the 19th century . Schokker were fishing sailing ships that were used in the Zuiderzee and were characterized in particular by the so-called Schokkerbaum, a swing-out device for fishing with trawls . The type of ship takes its name from the island of Schokland in the Zuidersee.

These vessels were also used to catch eel on the Rhine .

The eel chokker was dragged into the river and anchored in the evening to catch it. The ropes to which the eel net was attached ran over pulleys on the mast. The eel net was laid to the side of the Schokker at the point with the strongest current in the river. The net could only be laid out and pulled in with cable winches.

With the start of night shipping in the 1950s, fishing with eel chokers was stopped at various locations on the Rhine. One of the last Schokker was in service until the 1980s. Today it is anchored as a technical monument on the Old Rhine near Rastatt-Wintersdorf . Presumably the last of these ships, the Aalschokker "Aranka" was decommissioned in 1990 and recognized as a movable monument a year later. Today it is anchored on the Rhine between the island of Grafenwerth and Bad Honnef near Bonn , where it has become a popular photo opportunity and symbol of the city. In September 2016, the Schokker was redesigned as a museum on the history of fishing.

In Schlüsselburg two Schokker are firmly moored operated still from the last remaining commercial fishermen Rhine-Westphalia. Inland navigation is diverted via the lock canal so that the Schokker are not an obstacle.
