Originally, the cemetery of the Sophiengemeinde had been located south of the site since 1798 , not far from the historic excise wall and the Torstrasse in front of it. During this time the area was called Vogtland (between Hamburger Tor and Rosenthaler Tor ). The cemetery was leveled in favor of a public swimming pool (today: Stadtbad Mitte ) and a green area (today: Heinrich-Zille-Park). The tradition is the cemetery II continued.

The street was laid out in 1904 at the expense of the Hamburg America Society . On April 13, 1904, it was named after Johann Rudolph Schröder (1852–1938), a member of the supervisory board.

The street itself has been preserved in its original substance except for one house. The Evangelical Methodist Church of the Redeemer (Schröderstrasse 5) is a listed building. It was built in the same year by Carl Breuer (* 1872) in neo-Gothic style behind a residential building and a small backyard. The Hoppe company established itself north of the street and became part of Tierra del Fuego .
