history

The urban development of Bremer Neustadt on the left bank of the Weser began after the fortification system was expanded in the 17th century, but it wasn't until the end of the 19th century that the district grew rapidly and by 1905 it had over 40,000 inhabitants. Several schools had to be built.

The two- and three-storey, clinker-brick auxiliary school I with partly a mansard roof and saddle roofs with bat dormers , strong rounded corners, a square tower and a small two-storey entrance building in 5/8 format was built in 1912/13. The interior is well preserved.

It was a 12-grade auxiliary school with a gym; some of the original gym equipment has been preserved. In 1911 the school on Vegesacker Strasse was built as an auxiliary school II in Bremen- Walle ; both schools cooperated. The schools were the beginning of the special schooling for poorly gifted and developmentally disabled children in Bremen; at that time a pioneering educational reform facility for the learning and language disabled.

The school initially only had four classes for boys, but soon (late 1913) there were nine classes with 182 students. She later took on the students at the auxiliary school on Ansgariistraße . The school on Hulsberg in the customs house on Hulsberg and the school on Gothaer Straße were at times branches. A small part of the school served as an advanced training school for the less able, i.e. students who had been released from the auxiliary school and were being prepared for vocational training. The name of the auxiliary school changed after the Second World War to special school and then to support center.

Today (2018) the school on Mainstrasse is still a support center for the areas of learning, language and behavior with children in grades 9 to 10 and the focus on career orientation and preparation . This should change soon as part of the current school policy development ( including schooling ).
